How does this work? There are satellites in a quite low orbit (about 800 km height; NOAA, Meteor and others), that surround the earth in about 2 h always crossing the poles. Due to the rotation of the earth they will cover the whole earth in about 12 h. During their flight they continuously scan the surface at different frequencies (near as well as far infrared) and these data are continuously sent to the earth at a frequency of about 137 MHz. They can be easily received when the satellite is above horizon at your particular place (typically for 10 to 15 min during each pass). The audible signal is converted into a picture by a special program.

During day and night data from far infrared are used for the first type of pictures. The clouds are shown coloured with increasing humidity, i.e. with increasing chances of rainfall.

The maximum resolution is about 4 km. The borders of the states and of land / sea are calculated from the flight data (Keppler data) and are produced by the program.
